The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has been recording strange sounds under the ocean for years; many of which defy explanation and invite speculation. These underwater sounds are notable for being unusually powerful and difficult if not impossible to identify. One hypothesis for the generation of such anomalous underwater sounds are that they are being created by living animals; very large living animals. Such unusual sound events that have been recorded by NOAA have been classified with such names such as “Julia,” “upsweep,” “the whistle” and “bloop” to name a few.
