Everyone has challenges in their life albeit some more so than others. It’s beneficial for one’s overall well-being to realize that most things in life are out of our control; the weather, traffic, the economy and especially the behavior of others. We can’t control much of the things that happen in our lives but we can choose to react to it in a way that betters us.
For example, author Dorche Harris faced challenges that not many would be able to identify with. Out of that adversity, Harris found the motivation to push herself to write and publish the novel, Reaching Danny. The story of a single mother who struggles to cope from an emotionally tragic past in order to love herself and in turn, allow herself to be loved.
“The reason I wrote my book is different from why I wanted to share it. Originally, the book was written as an outlet for the pain, anger and humiliation I felt. Eventually, I wanted to share my story with other people, especially women, around the world. It took me a while to find my purpose and I want others to know they are more than their circumstances. As long as they take a chance, it’ll be worthwhile.”
When did you first know you would become a writer?
“Ten years ago, when Myspace was still a thing, I started role-playing online. I loved creating characters, designing them and providing them with their own story. Eventually, writing became an outlet for me and I would block out the real world and enter my own. I was 13 years old when I decided I wanted to pursue my career as an Author. It was a dream come true when it actually happened.”
Are there any challenges you have overcome that you would like to elaborate on?
“Life comes with challenges and mine came from lack of motivation, being a wife and a mother and working unfulfilling jobs to make a living. When I hit a low point in my life, that’s when I started taking my work seriously and going after what I really wanted. It took a lot of hard work, consistency and late nights but it was well worth it.”
What advice would you give to a beginning writer?
“Start reading. Before I ever thought of being a writer, I spent my time reading; a lot. It was a past time for me. When reading, you learn different writing styles and how to write certain genres. I was always interested in fiction, specifically romance. Next, write. Write as much as you can, even if it is for thirty minutes a day. When I started writing, I developed my own writing style and learned what I needed to write a good story. It takes consistency. Consistency is going to be the hardest thing because life throws things at you. So, create a goal for yourself and follow through with it.”
Any other information you would like to share with the public?
“If you are truly longing to become an Author, work for it. Don’t let anything stand between you and your goals. Create an inspiration board. Create a goal. Be consistent. Nothing can stand in your way unless you allow it to.”
Do you have a favorite writing quote?
“Don’t tell me the sky is the limit, when there are footprints on the moon.”
